Waggy Tailed Friends
Dogs Are Family Too
Choosing the perfect holiday accommodation to include your furry pawed companion is an important part of planning your holiday. We are a dog family at Menagerie House and we welcome well-behaved dogs to share in the experience. The cottage is large enough to accommodate two small or medium size dogs and York’s ever expanding range of places to eat and shop with your dogs alongside, means no one gets left behind! Below we share a wealth of walks right on your doorstep, and we have indicated in our ‘Great Places To Eat & Drink In York’ page where dogs are also welcome to help you plan with the whole family in mind.

Dog Walks Around York City
The River Ouse
This is our go-to walk with Ezra, our mischievous cockapoo. How far you want to walk is up to you but if your pooch is good off the lead, starting at Scarborough Bridge (railway station side) walk away from town until you reach Clifton Bridge. You can choose to come up here (on lead) and cross over the bridge and return back to the city centre on the other side of the river, turning left at the stone archway (as above) on Marygate and walk through the Museum Gardens which is on the right of you (back on lead). There is a dog-friendly independent pub further up the street, The Minster Inn, which serves good freshly made pizzas and on Sundays they are 2-4-1!
If you wish to take the longer route (less than an hour), go under Clifton Bridge and follow the river around passed Clifton Sands and come back on to the path at Landing Lane, where you can walk back to Clifton Bridge and go back down on the same side of the river to have a nice coffee at the Perky Peacock or return on the other side of the river via the Museum Gardens as above.
Fulford Ings
This is a 1.5 mile walk on flat terrain on the outskirts of York City. Boots are a must if it has been raining or the river has recently flooded. It runs alongside the river and is great for letting dogs off their lead. Further details can be found here.
York Solar System Walk
This is a walk which takes you out of the city and includes a scale model of the Solar System spread out along 6.4 miles of the old East Coast mainline railway. It is easily reached via the Askham Bar Park and Ride or parking you car at the Park and Ride. The track takes you through a nature reserve with an abundance of wildlife and there are several pubs en route serving food, particularly in Bishopthorpe.
There are lots more walks to be found around the city and close by which you will find here.
The Foss Fairy Trail
This is a lovely short walk for children and dogs, which will keep young ones busy as they count all the fairy dwellings hidden in the trees, many of which are fairy-sized replicas of buildings you will see in the city. It is on the North side of the River Ouse, approximately ten minutes from York Minster and it leads you along the banks of the River Foss. Details can be found here.
