Menagerie House was founded in 2022 by Sarah and Christopher Glass, still the sole owners and managers of the property today.  After a 15-year career in teaching Sarah had a burning desire to start something new, a family affair which would give them time to enjoy the city and county they love.  Their experience of self-catering accommodation convinced them both that there was a niche in the luxury homestay market which Sarah’s creative talents would thrive in.  From this Menagerie House was born.

After months of searching for the perfect house in the perfect location, they were finally able to realise their vision.  Sarah’s thought-provoking whimsical approach to design and obsessive attention to detail has culminated in a playful and experiential homestay that honours the origins of the property and celebrates York.

In 2024, Chris and Sarah embarked on their next adventure with Pocket Cottage, nestled in the quaint North Yorkshire village of Stillington. Though very different in size and location, it carries the signature mischievous and colourful style their homes have become known for. This complementary retreat continues the whimsical charm, layered design, and playful spirit that delights guests at Menagerie House, creating another character-filled haven where history and imagination intertwine seamlessly.
